Lake Wylie is a reservoir located in South Carolina and North Carolina. The lake has a surface area of 13,400 acres and features 325 miles of shore line. Lake Wylie was named in honor Dr. W. Gil Wylie, one of the founders of the original Catawba Power Company that had created the lake and become Duke Power. Lake Wylie's location on both the South Carolina and North Carolina borders makes it a common recreational destination for residents of nearby cities including Charlotte, Fort Mill or Rock Hill. Duke Power manages six public boat access areas on the lake. Lake Wylie is somewhat split in the middle of Mecklenburg County west and York County east with Tega Cay, SC at its peninsula about 20 miles from Charlotte. The name Tega Cay is Polynesian for “Beautiful Peninsula.” The city’s slogan is “The Good Life.” The surprisingly hilly terrain of Tega Cay is densely forested, containing many species of hardwoods and pines, and wildlife. Recreational facilities located in Tega Cay include 27 holes of golf with a clubhouse and pavilion, 8 lighted tennis courts, several miles of walking trails, and 2 city-owned parks with baseball and soccer fields available for public use. The city has 13 mi of shoreline, and waterfront amenities include a beach and swimming center, 4 city parks located on the shore, 2 waterfront parks still in the planning stages, a marina, and 3 areas to launch boats. The most popular and sought-after upscale communities of Lake Wylie are The Santuary and The Palisades. Homes in these communities have been featured in Home-a-Rama several times in the past five or six years. Exclusive homes in these communities range from $1 million to over $5 million. Both The Santuary and The Palisades pride themselves as being communities that preserve nature at its core. Consideration has been placed on protecting the watershed environment and preserving much of the area's natural features. The Palisades includes a Nicklaus Design Championship Golf Course, private country club, town center for shopping and services, equestrian center, soccer-training complex, and miles of trails and paths - a combination unique to the region. Those that seek the Lake Wylie area seek its lavish lake-living lifestyle. It's away from it all, but only 20 miles north of the major city of Charlotte, for the occasional craving of Charlotte's many night clubs, restaurants and museums.
