Lake Norman, created between 1959 and 1964 as part of the construction of the Cowans Ford Dam by Duke Energy, is the largest manmade body of fresh water located entirely within North Carolina. It is fed by the Catawba River. It was named after former Duke Power president Norman Cocke. Lake Norman is sometimes referred to as the "inland sea"; it offers 520 miles of shoreline and a surface area of more than 50 square miles. Interstate 77, North Carolina Highway 16 and North Carolina Highway 150 cross Lake Norman at different points. The Lake Norman area consist of mostly Mecklenburg County to the south of the Lake and Iredell to the north, with a smaller strip of eastern Lincoln County. In Mecklenburg you get the towns of Davidson, Cornelius and Mooresville. In Iredell County you get the city of Statesville and the towns of Mooresville and Troutman. In eastern Lincoln County you get the towns of Stanley, Iron Station and Denver. Lastly, north of Denver is Sherrills Ford, NC in Catawba County. Upscale communities of Lake Norman include the The Point, Governor's Island, Norman Estates and the Greg Norman Golf community of The Point, just to name a few.
