Davidson is a small and charming town in Mecklenburg county. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.1 square miles of which, 4.9 square miles of it is land and 0.2 square miles of it (3.95%) is water. Going to Davidson is like going back in time. It is home to Davidson College. Davidson is unique in that it is very different both geographically and culturally from the rest of Mecklenburg County. Lying along the eastern shore of Lake Norman, the town is centered around the college from which it takes its name. The town was founded in 1837 with the establishment of the Presbyterian Davidson College, named for Brigadier General William Lee Davidson, a local Revolutionary War hero in Mecklenburg County. The land for Davidson College came from Davidson's estate, a large portion of which was donated by his son. Davidson College is located in the heart of Davidson. The College Arboretum (100 acres) is an arboretum located across the main campus of Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina. It is open to the public daily without charge. The arboretum's origins stretch as far back as 1869 when a Report of the Faculty to the trustees recommended making the campus "represent in time the forest growth of the State, and if possible, the general botany of the region". The campus became a formal arboretum in 1982. Today the arboretum contains a collection of woody plants that thrive in North Carolina's Piedmont region.
